Can You Put Interior Shutters on Doors?

Shutters are a gorgeous addition to windows in any room, but how do you create a cohesive design if a room also has sliding glass doors? There's no rule against interior shutters for sliding glass and French doors, so let's discuss the best ways to include these stunning décor accents on doors.

Knowing that you can use interior shutters for sliding glass and French doors, we'll share why you should consider this option.

  • Horizontal and vertical blinds use brackets for installation, but the slats are not secured to the door. This means the blinds will move and make noise whenever you open or close the door. You also have to unclip them from the bottom bracket when you want to raise them fully. But, Shutters are mounted to frames, which are, in turn, securely attached to the door frame. There are no bottom brackets; your shutters will remain silent as you open and close the door.
  • If the view from your sliding glass doors is magnificent, you know it adds substantial value to your property. Interior shutters are the only window treatments with permanent fixture status so you can include them in your home's appraisal value. Even if you have no plans to sell, a higher home value will give you more equity to borrow against.
  • The slats on blinds max out at 2.5" wide. While this width still offers a considerable view, it's not nearly as broad as the view with 3.5 or 4.5" louvers. Wider louvers are more aesthetically appealing on more extensive applications, like sliding glass doors. French doors are less extensive than sliding glass ones, so we suggest using 3.5"-wide louvers.
  • Shutters are a more durable choice for doors. They are thicker and less susceptible to wear and tear with time. Unlike vertical blinds, interior shutters do not have a top track that can accumulate dust and affect their motion.
  • You can choose from various tilt bars and control options for interior shutters. The classic front tilt bar is an excellent choice for traditional interiors, but there are also styles with a rear or no tilt bar. You can move your shutters to the side with a bi-fold track or panels that slide past each other.
  • Shutters are cordless, so they are safer and have a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.
