Enjoy Better Privacy with Sidelight Shades & Blinds

Sidelights allow more natural light to enter your home and provide a unique visual accent to your home’s entryway. Unfortunately, uncovered sidelights can cause UV damage to your flooring and allow for prying eyes to see into your home. But you can fix these problems with the simple addition of sidelight window coverings. The Design 5 Ltd. team shares our favorite shades and blinds for covering and accenting your sidelights.

Sidelights Come in Many Sizes

Sure, most sidelights are narrow, but there are many wider options that also need coverage. The wider your sidelights, the more options you have for shades and blinds to cover them. If your sidelights are exceptionally slim, think four inches wide or less, you may not be able to have functional coverings for them. The good news is that you can choose shades with sheer or light-filtering fabric, so you can still take advantage of and enjoy the sunlight even if you aren’t able to adjust the shades themselves.

Sidelights Shades

Fabric shades are an outstanding option for sidelights because you can choose from various material opacities. Duette® Cellular Shades not only diffuse light beautifully, but they also offer exceptional insulation at the window, which can reduce your home’s energy usage. Cellular shades are available with a top-down/bottom-up design, so you can configure yours to the amount of light and privacy that best suits your home.

Silhouette® Sheer Shades are another fantastic choice for covering sidelights. Sheer shades bring superior UV protection to the table and allow abundant natural light to enter your home while preserving privacy. Silhouette® Sheer Shades have adjustable fabric vanes between a sheer front and backing, giving you maximum control over incoming light and privacy. Sheer shades are delicately beautiful and are an excellent choice for contemporary decor.

Cover Your Sidelights with Shutters or Blinds

Shutters are synonymous with a classic, traditional style. They have endless character and charm and are the only window covering you can include in an appraisal of your home. Since shutters are securely installed inside the window frame, you never have to worry about them moving in the breeze when your door opens or closes. Heritance® Hardwood Shutters are gorgeous, but Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Vinyl Shutters or NewStyle® Composite Shutters may be better for sidelights as they can handle extreme temperatures and moisture.

If you prefer a sleek, sophisticated interior, consider using Modern Precious Metals® Mini Blinds for your home’s sidelights. Metal blinds in ultra-slim ½” wide slats perfectly complement narrow sidelights. They are also a durable choice that resists dents and rust. Tilt the slats to allow as much or as little natural light as possible.
