Window Treatment Do’s and Don’ts

Many people think that window treatments are like the icing on a cake or a nice finishing touch. The truth is that your window coverings should never be treated as an afterthought. Your window blinds or shades should be one of the main ingredients of the “cake”.  The type of window treatments you go with can dramatically alter the look of an entire room. If you choose full drapery paired with shutters, your space will have a look of tailored sophistication. Roman or roller shades will give a casual elegance and streamlined feel to a room.

The Design 5 team has put together a list of do’s and don’ts to help you make the most informed choices when it comes to outfitting your windows.

Window Treatment Do’s

  • Do look at a room. Picture the entire space from the onset of the design process. Take a step back and picture what you have envisioned for the entire space. If the shades or shutters aren’t part of the early design process, your final result can look mismatched and awkward.
  • Do take the natural light of a room into consideration. There are an endless number of window covering options to meet every preference and need. You should not assume you’ll love the look of Provenance® Woven Wood Shades simply because you think they look amazing in your sister’s family room. You’ll need to decide if you want to block or filter the sunlight, and this will give you a good jumping-off point for choosing blinds or shades that meet your needs.
  • Do make sure you think about the purpose and function of a room when choosing window treatments. A shade with an open weave or Designer Roller Shades may be great at your cottage where you have no close neighbors. When at home, you may want to add a liner for additional privacy, especially if you live on a busy street.

Window Treatment Don’ts

  • You don’t want to create a completely different look in every room of your home (unless that eclectic look is exactly what you were going for). Your rooms don’t have to look exactly the same, but some similarities will help create a continuous, cohesive feel in your home. Your window coverings should complement each other. You can accomplish this by opting for blinds in every room but switching up the stain color or hanging Roman shades throughout the house and adding drapery in more formal rooms.
  • You shouldn’t put your personal taste above the practical function of your window coverings. It will be tempting to choose shades based solely on how they look, but you may end up regretting that decision. For example, a Roman shade made with silk may not be the best choice for your kitchen where it will be exposed to moisture and food. Sheer shades are a gorgeous addition to almost any space but are not the best choice to block out early morning sun in your bedroom.
