Questions to Ask When Choosing Window Treatments
Deciding on new window treatments can be an overwhelming challenge. Choosing window coverings should be fun! We want the process to be as easy as possible, so we’ve put together a list of questions to ask yourself when it’s time to buy.
- What level of privacy is needed? If privacy is not a top priority, you can opt for any window treatment you’d like. This includes sheer shades, rolling shades, and solar shades. Your privacy needs will help determine if you need specialty shades, such as ones that provide top-down/bottom-up operation. Silhouette® and Pirouette® Window Shadings are both excellent choices for sheer shades. Designer Roller Shades and Designer Screen Shades are perfect if you prefer a rolling-style window treatment.
- How much sunlight is desired? If you have a terrible glare hitting you while you sleep, are a light sleeper, or are placing window treatments in a home theater, you will want an opaque material to block more natural light.
- Are there children or pets in your home? Homes with young children or pets may want to consider window treatments with a cordless operation. Hunter Douglas offers PowerView Automation, as well as several other safe choices. Children can also be hard on window coverings, so consider getting something durable and easy to clean, like Modern Precious Metals® aluminum blinds.
- Do you have a great view? Some window treatments, such as shutters or heavy drapes, will block out some of a great view even when open fully. Cellular shades are easy to move when you want to enjoy the view. For glass doors or vast expanses of glass, vertical blinds stack tightly to the side when open.
- Is there more than one type of window in the room? If your room has several different size windows, or windows and doors, you’ll want products that coordinate easily. Hunter Douglas side panels and drapery are custom-made and can easily coordinate with many different styles of window treatments.
- What level of upkeep can you handle? Hard treatments, like wood and faux wood, show dust accumulation faster than fabric treatments. However, hard treatments tend to be much easier to clean. Decide what you are willing to commit to before you buy.
- How long will you be in the home? If you plan to be in your current home for many years, your options are more open-ended. For those planning to sell in the near future, you may want to stick with more neutral shades and prints. Bold patterns and colors can make it hard for potential buyers to see their own spin of the home.
